Autism Evaluation and Diagnosis

Psychological testing for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis involves a comprehensive assessment. The goal of these assessments is to gather information about an individual's behavior, communication skills, social interactions, and other relevant factors to determine whether they meet the criteria for an ASD diagnosis. You may be concerned about possible symptoms of ASD in your child, or even yourself. We can help.

The ADOS-2 will be conducted for ASD assessments. The ADOS-2 is the “gold standard” for diagnosis and represents the highest level of testing for ASD. We will also complete a developmental history and gather information from other sources. The ADOS-2 is designed for individuals as young as 12-months of age all the way through adulthood. The psychologist selects the appropriate module for an individual based upon the person’s language ability (ranging from no speech to verbally fluent) and age.

The Benefits of Psychological Testing and Assessment

  1. Informed Treatment Planning: Psychological testing equips therapists with a more comprehensive foundation for developing personalized treatment plans. Testing provides a clearer path towards understanding of a patients’ cognitive abilities, emotional struggles and personality traits. Our therapists can use this information to tailor skills and interventions that align with the individual's specific needs and preferences.

  2. Precision and Efficiency: Traditional talk therapy relies heavily on self-reported information, which may not always be complete. Psychological testing introduces an objective and standardized dimension to the assessment process, enhancing the accuracy of diagnoses and treatment planning.

  3. Uncovering Underlying Issues: Some psychological issues might not be immediately apparent through conversations alone. Psychological tests can uncover hidden issues that could be contributing to a patient's distress, allowing therapists to address root causes effectively.

  4. Monitoring Progress: Regular testing at various stages of therapy provides an objective way to measure progress. Both patients and therapists can track improvements and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan based on concrete data.

  5. Enhanced Self-awareness: Psychological testing results often shed light on aspects of a patient's personality, coping mechanisms, and thought processes that they might not have been aware of. This increased self-awareness can be a powerful catalyst for personal growth and transformation.
